Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, and may be influenced by promotional considerations. This market, however, represents the collective prediction of traders who have 'skin in the game'. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market can quickly adjust as new information emerges and traders react to it. Discrepancies between the two can highlight interesting areas for further investigation, potentially revealing where the crowd disagrees with conventional wisdom.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome will happen, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will rise. This creates a dynamic pricing system that reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd. The current trading volume indicates the level of interest and conviction surrounding this match.
