Prediction market odds and traditional sportsbook odds often diverge because they reflect different participant bases and incentive structures. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and lock in profit margins, while prediction markets like this one price outcomes through continuous trading among participants seeking to profit on accuracy. Prediction markets typically incorporate real-time information and can adjust faster than sportsbooks during breaking news or lineup changes. However, sportsbooks may offer tighter spreads due to higher volume and professional market-making. Comparing the two can reveal where consensus differs and highlight potential value opportunities in either venue.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker (AMM) mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing each outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each outcome fluctuates based on the ratio of shares in the liquidity pool, incentivizing traders to arbitrage mispricings and push prices toward true probability. As traders accumulate shares in one outcome, its price rises, reflecting increased conviction. The current odds reflect the latest trades and market sentiment. Polymarket's transparent order flow allows participants to see depth and execute trades with predictable slippage, creating a continuous price discovery process throughout the trading window.
