Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often incorporating information and analysis that sportsbooks might miss or weigh differently. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert opinions, this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, leading to potentially more accurate probabilities as the event approaches. Discrepancies can arise due to differing risk assessments, the influence of public sentiment, and the incentives of participants in each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than traditional sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its shares will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd and provides a real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
