Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, which can differ from sportsbook odds influenced by house biases and public betting patterns. Sportsbooks set initial lines to balance action, while this market allows traders to freely express their beliefs about the probability of each outcome. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market probabilities and sportsbook odds, it might indicate an opportunity for value betting, assuming you agree with the market's assessment. It’s important to note that both represent probabilities, but are derived through different mechanisms.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust to reflect the evolving consensus. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on the Polymarket exchange, and is not influenced by external factors or predetermined values.
