Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds due to varying information sources and incentives. Sportsbooks typically set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows participants to directly express their beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise from differing levels of expertise among participants, or from unique information considered by the prediction market crowd. It's common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than traditional betting venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price fluctuates based on supply and demand; if more people believe an outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the traders on Polymarket.
