Prediction market odds and traditional sportsbook odds often diverge because they reflect different participant bases and incentive structures. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and protect their margins, while prediction markets aggregate the collective beliefs of traders risking real capital on outcomes. This market may show higher or lower implied probabilities than major sportsbooks, depending on whether traders here perceive different value or have access to unique information. Comparing the two can highlight where professional and retail sentiment diverge, though both sources inform serious bettors and analysts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that adjusts odds based on the ratio of shares bought and sold for each outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders purchase shares representing their prediction, and the price moves continuously as supply and demand shift. Higher trading volume typically narrows spreads and improves price accuracy, while lower volume can widen the gap between bid and ask prices. The system incentivizes early traders and those with strong convictions, since larger positions or well-timed entries can capture better prices before the market reprices.
