Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd. As a result, discrepancies can emerge, particularly when there's strong public sentiment or access to unique information among traders. It’s common to see prediction market odds move independently of sportsbook lines, especially as new information becomes available before the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The market’s efficiency is driven by the incentive for traders to accurately predict the result, as correct predictions yield profits.
