Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, driven by the collective intelligence of traders on Polymarket, aims to reflect the true probabilities as perceived by the crowd. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly adjust based on new information and changing sentiment, potentially offering more accurate probabilities as the event approaches. It's common to see differences in implied probabilities between the two.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price fluctuations are driven by supply and demand, and traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as profitable trades are rewarded. This dynamic pricing allows the market to efficiently aggregate information and generate a probability estimate.
