Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probabilities as assessed by traders. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when there is strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. It’s common to see prediction markets move more efficiently based on new information, as traders can quickly adjust their positions. Comparing these odds can reveal where the 'wisdom of the crowd' differs from professional oddsmakers.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market depth and trading volume influence how quickly the price adjusts to new information or changing sentiment. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the traders participating in the market.
