Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and to balance action, while this market represents the collective beliefs of traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply the dynamics of supply and demand within the prediction market. It’s common to see this market adjust rapidly to news and information, potentially leading to odds movements that diverge from those offered by sportsbooks. Examining these differences can be a valuable exercise for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the prices of these shares fluctuate, reflecting the evolving collective assessment of the championship winner. The market’s price discovery process allows for a dynamic and real-time estimation of the likelihood of each team’s success.
