Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market relies on individuals freely trading based on their beliefs. If a significant difference emerges, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on Polymarket and a sportsbook. However, it's important to remember that prediction markets and sportsbooks have different costs and risk profiles, which can contribute to discrepancies.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market price fluctuates based on supply and demand, with increased buying pressure driving up the price and vice versa. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust its predictions accordingly.
