Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to differences in implied probabilities, especially when there is strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. It’s common to see this market diverge from sportsbook odds as new information emerges or as traders react to events differently than the broader betting public. Analyzing these differences can reveal valuable insights into market perceptions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the collective wisdom of the traders. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its corresponding shares will climb. Conversely, if sentiment shifts, the price will adjust accordingly, creating a dynamic and responsive market. This is a forward-looking assessment, incorporating all available information and expectations.
