Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds to ensure profitability, which can slightly distort the implied probabilities. This market, driven by the wisdom of the crowd on Polymarket, aims to represent the true probability of an outcome as perceived by traders. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly adjust to incorporate new information and potentially outperform traditional odds, especially as the event approaches and more data becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a growing expectation of that result. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand, with traders acting as both market makers and informed speculators. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
