Prediction market odds often reflect the 'wisdom of the crowd,' potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the opinions of many individual traders. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate than traditional polls or point spreads, as participants have 'skin in the game' and are incentivized to make informed predictions. It's common to see discrepancies, especially early in the market's life, as information becomes incorporated into both sets of odds.
On Kalshi, this market is priced as a continuous probability scale, ranging from 0 to 100. The price represents the probability of a particular outcome occurring – in this case, Princeton winning the first half. Traders buy and sell contracts representing each team, and the price adjusts based on supply and demand. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The higher the price, the more likely the market believes that outcome is to happen. This dynamic pricing mechanism allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and reflect changing expectations about the game's potential result.
