Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially incorporating information and analysis beyond what's readily available to traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert opinions, this market allows traders to adjust probabilities based on a wider range of factors, including news, injuries, and even subtle changes in player form. It’s common to see differences emerge as new information becomes available, and the market reacts accordingly. Comparing these odds to those offered by sportsbooks can reveal interesting discrepancies in perceived probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of each player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is determined by the share price, and traders aim to profit by accurately predicting the result of the match. The market’s price is driven entirely by supply and demand among traders.
