Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a margin for profit, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If prediction market participants collectively disagree with the sportsbook's assessment, the odds here will move accordingly. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges, as traders react to news and adjust their positions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares of a particular outcome, its price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. Conversely, increased selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic pricing system ensures the market odds are constantly updated based on the collective intelligence of the traders.
