Generally, prediction market odds tend to reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, often proving more accurate than traditional sportsbook odds. However, it’s important to note that sportsbooks incorporate factors like promotional offers and hedging strategies that aren’t necessarily present in this market. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market allows anyone to participate and express their beliefs, potentially leading to a different assessment of probabilities. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources and analytical approaches, but this market frequently converges towards a more accurate prediction as the event nears.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and any external factors are indirectly reflected through trader behavior. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of those participating.
