Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and internal analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders attempt to profit from the mispricing between the two. Examining these differences can offer insights into public sentiment and potential market inefficiencies.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, ultimately reflecting the market's consensus probability. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates the probability that traders assign to that outcome occurring, and this probability is constantly updated as new trades are made. The total volume traded in this market is $130.
