Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by individuals betting their own capital. As a result, you may observe discrepancies between the implied probabilities on Polymarket and those offered by sportsbooks. These differences can arise from varying levels of information, biases, or simply differing interpretations of the same data. It’s useful to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability distribution. As more people buy shares indicating a particular outcome will occur, the price of those shares increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current volume traded provides insight into how much attention and capital are focused on this particular event, influencing the price discovery process.
