Prediction market odds often reflect a different outlook than traditional sportsbook lines. On decentralized platforms, prices are set by traders betting real money, which can incorporate nuanced or forward-looking information — for example, recent practice performances or shifting rankings — that sportsbooks may not fully weigh. This can create price discrepancies, especially for niche events. The spread between the two can also vary with trading volume; higher volume usually tightens the gap, while low volume may leave prediction markets more volatile.
On Polymarket and Kalshi, prices can diverge because user bases and available liquidity differ, leading to varied assessments of the same event. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. For instance, one platform might attract more traders focused on long-term analytics, while another could see rapid bets driven by short-term news, pushing its implied probability away from the other. Differences in trading volume also play a role — a thinner market can exaggerate price swings from single large trades, whereas heavier volume tends to smooth out fluctuations and pull prices closer together.
