Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the views of many individual traders. If a significant number of informed bettors believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, the prediction market may show a different probability. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before a lot of money has been traded on either side. Examining these differences can reveal insights into public perception versus expert analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market efficiently incorporates new information as it becomes available, reflecting the collective intelligence of the participants. The current price reflects the aggregated assessment of all traders on Polymarket.
