Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the competitors’ strengths. If a significant difference emerges, it may indicate an opportunity for arbitrage, where traders can profit by exploiting the price difference between the two venues. However, it's important to remember that prediction markets are forward-looking and can react quickly to new information.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a specific outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is entirely driven by supply and demand; there is no central authority setting the odds. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities accordingly, providing a real-time assessment of expectations.
