Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual bettors. If a significant number of people believe a sportsbook is mispricing a player's chances, the prediction market may show a different probability. It's common to see discrepancies, especially early in the betting cycle, as information becomes available and public opinion evolves. This market provides an alternative perspective on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market dynamically adjusts to new information and changing sentiment, providing a real-time assessment of probabilities. This allows traders to express their views and profit if their predictions prove accurate, influencing the overall market price.
