Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, aiming to profit regardless of the outcome, while this market allows traders to directly express their beliefs about the probability of each outcome. Polls and analyses currently suggest a similar expectation of outcome probabilities, but this market provides a continuously updated assessment based on actual money at risk. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying levels of market participation.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, and there are no external factors influencing the pricing process. This dynamic pricing allows for a highly responsive and informative market.
