Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven purely by traders expressing their beliefs about the outcome. If there's a significant discrepancy, it could indicate that the market perceives information differently than sportsbooks, or that one venue has access to unique insights. It’s also possible that differing risk appetites between market participants and sportsbook operators contribute to these variations.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand. As more people buy shares in a specific outcome, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all traders on Polymarket regarding the likelihood of each player winning the match. This dynamic pricing ensures the market stays responsive to new information and changing opinions.
