Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, driven by the wisdom of the crowd, tends to be more efficient and can sometimes offer more favorable odds, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. However, it’s important to note that sportsbooks have different information and models, so discrepancies can exist. Comparing the two can be a useful strategy for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of the event occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The current price indicates the market's expectation, and traders aim to profit by correctly predicting the outcome and capitalizing on any mispricing. The market is entirely driven by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket.
