Prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi operate on real-money trading, where participants buy and sell shares tied to outcomes. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, which set odds and manage risk through vigorish, prediction markets derive prices from continuous supply and demand. This often produces sharper, less biased estimates because traders face direct financial incentive to price accurately. Sportsbooks, by contrast, adjust lines to balance action and protect margins. For this market, comparing prediction prices to sportsbook spreads can reveal whether public betting is skewed relative to informed trader positioning, sometimes surfacing value opportunities.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different odds on the same event for several reasons. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform attracts distinct trader demographics, liquidity pools, and fee structures, which influence how quickly prices adjust to new information. Polymarket may have deeper liquidity in certain outcome ranges, while Kalshi might see faster participation from a different user base. Additionally, subtle differences in market design—such as order-book depth, minimum trade sizes, or promotional incentives—can create temporary price gaps. These spreads typically narrow as arbitrageurs exploit them, but during low-liquidity windows or around breaking news, divergence can persist and signal where conviction differs most sharply.
