Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market relies on the collective predictions of informed traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamics of each venue. It's common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than sportsbooks, especially in response to unexpected developments. Analyzing both can provide a more comprehensive view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. The current price reflects the aggregated sentiment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's likelihood. The market's price is driven entirely by supply and demand among traders.
