Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market reflects the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying interpretations of the event's likelihood. If there’s a significant difference between the implied probability on Polymarket and sportsbook odds, it may signal an opportunity for informed traders to exploit a mispricing.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus. The market’s efficiency stems from the fact that traders are financially incentivized to express their true beliefs, leading to a potentially more accurate forecast than traditional methods.
