Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while this market aims to represent the true probability as assessed by traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, biases among bettors, and the incentive structures of each venue. If there’s a significant difference, it might suggest that prediction market participants have access to information not yet fully priced into sportsbook lines, or vice versa.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price fluctuates, reflecting the collective wisdom of the crowd. The market’s price isn’t determined by any central authority but emerges from the interactions of buyers and sellers, creating a dynamic and potentially more accurate assessment of the event’s likelihood.
