Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance their risk and ensure profit, while this market is driven purely by individuals wagering on their beliefs about the outcome. This can lead to discrepancies, particularly when public opinion diverges from expert analysis. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate information and signals faster than sportsbooks, especially in response to breaking news or subtle shifts in perceived probabilities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell contracts representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a contract directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the aggregated expectations of the crowd. The market's depth—the amount of volume available at different price points—indicates the level of conviction behind the current pricing. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date information available.
