Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin. This market, being driven by user predictions, can sometimes offer more favorable odds, reflecting the collective wisdom of the crowd. However, sportsbook odds benefit from professional analysis and risk management. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions on player form, potential upsets, or even public betting biases. Comparing these odds can reveal where the market diverges from conventional wisdom.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders believe Scott Winder will win, the price of shares representing his victory will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment, creating a constantly updated assessment of the likely result.
