Comparing prediction market odds to sportsbook odds reveals how the wisdom of the crowd differs from expert analysis. Often, prediction markets can offer different probabilities than traditional sportsbooks, reflecting a broader range of information and perspectives. This can be due to factors like differing levels of specialized knowledge or the influence of public sentiment. It's important to note that these are distinct sources of information, and discrepancies can arise based on their respective methodologies and participant bases.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The higher the demand for shares representing a particular outcome, the higher the price, and thus the greater the implied probability. This dynamic pricing adjusts in real-time as new information becomes available and traders update their beliefs about the Lewis Cook vs Francesco Basili match.
