Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, driven by the collective intelligence of traders on Polymarket, aims to reflect the true probability of an outcome as perceived by the crowd. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market continuously adjusts based on real-money wagers, potentially leading to more accurate predictions, especially as the event approaches. It's important to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price reflects the aggregated wisdom of the crowd, and any significant shifts in price can indicate changing perceptions about the event's likely result. This dynamic pricing system allows for a fluid and responsive market.
