Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and risk management, while this market is driven by individual traders’ beliefs. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Analyzing these differences can reveal insights into public sentiment and potential value opportunities, though it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities of an outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. The market’s depth and trading volume indicate the level of confidence and interest surrounding the event, providing a dynamic assessment of potential results.
