Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can take positions that drive the prediction market odds in a different direction. This dynamic can lead to prediction markets providing more accurate probabilities, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. It's a fascinating comparison of different forecasting methods.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of the event occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders adjust their positions based on new information, leading to fluctuations in the price. Higher demand for shares in a particular outcome will drive up its price, indicating a greater perceived likelihood, while increased selling pressure will lower the price. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
