Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, which can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven purely by individuals willing to bet on their beliefs. Historically, prediction markets have demonstrated accuracy in forecasting event outcomes, sometimes outperforming traditional methods. However, sportsbook odds may incorporate factors not fully captured by this market, such as team news or injuries, leading to discrepancies. It’s valuable to compare both to form a well-rounded perspective.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the latest information and collective judgment of participants. The market’s efficiency is driven by the incentive for traders to accurately assess the likelihood of each result, as profitable trades are rewarded.
