Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the views of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can take the opposite position, driving the prediction market odds in a different direction. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the collective intelligence of the prediction market participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a probability distribution for the event.
