Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the beliefs of a diverse group of traders. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate forecasters of event outcomes, as they benefit from the collective intelligence of participants. However, sportsbook odds can still offer a useful point of comparison, and significant discrepancies between the two may present potential opportunities for informed traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the aggregate assessment of all traders on Polymarket regarding the likelihood of each player winning the match.
