Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook odds which are set by professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks may incorporate biases or seek to profit from public perception, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, potentially driving the prediction market odds closer to those offered by sportsbooks. However, it’s not uncommon to see prediction markets offer different probabilities, especially as new information emerges and influences traders’ views.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a particular outcome will happen, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will rise. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd and adjusts in real-time based on trading activity.
