Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows traders to express their own independent assessments. If a significant discrepancy exists between the implied probability on Polymarket and sportsbook odds, it might suggest the market believes the sportsbook has mispriced the event. However, it’s important to remember that both represent probabilities based on different methodologies and information sets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is entirely driven by supply and demand, reflecting the collective intelligence of the traders participating in this event.
