Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, reflecting their profit margin. This market, however, is driven purely by the collective predictions of traders, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market reflects the wisdom of the crowd and can adjust rapidly to new developments or insights. It’s a useful comparison to see where public opinion diverges from professional analysis.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price converges towards a consensus view. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability of a particular outcome is reflected in the share price, and traders can adjust their positions based on new information or changing expectations. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence.
