Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their risk and ensure profit, while this market represents the aggregated beliefs of informed traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view by trading on Polymarket, potentially driving the odds closer to what they perceive as the true probability. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information than traditional sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and reflects their collective assessment of the likelihood of each competitor winning the match.
