Often, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from those initially set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks may establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market incorporates the collective predictions of numerous traders. This can lead to discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment changes. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to unexpected developments than traditional betting venues, offering a potentially more dynamic assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price movements are driven by supply and demand; increased buying pressure raises the price, indicating growing confidence in that outcome, while increased selling pressure lowers it. This creates a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
