Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their books and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on traders directly expressing their beliefs about the outcome. If a significant number of informed bettors believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can influence the price on Polymarket, potentially creating discrepancies. It’s common to see prediction markets converge towards the true probability as more information becomes available and trading volume increases, but initial differences are frequent.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome of the Coelho vs Tanner match. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is driven entirely by supply and demand; if more people believe a particular outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa.
