Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially offering a more accurate forecast than traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may incorporate biases or adjust lines to encourage balanced betting, whereas this market relies on individuals directly expressing their beliefs. However, discrepancies can occur due to differing information access, risk appetite, and market participants. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information and potentially offer more favorable odds for informed bettors, though this isn’t always the case.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom. The market’s price is driven by supply and demand; if many traders believe an outcome is likely, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa.
