Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, which represents their profit margin. This market, driven by the collective wisdom of traders on Polymarket, aims to represent the true probability of an event occurring, though discrepancies can arise due to differing information or risk assessments. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform sportsbooks in accuracy, particularly when there’s significant public interest and active trading.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of a particular result. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe a player will win, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will climb. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adjust to incorporate new information and changing sentiment. The current volume of trading is unknown, but it influences price discovery.
