Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines to balance action on both sides and incorporate a profit margin, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs about the actual outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, analytical approaches, or simply varying levels of confidence in a particular result. Examining these differences can reveal insights into where the crowd believes there is value, or where sportsbooks may have mispriced the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The current volume indicates the level of interest and conviction surrounding the potential results of the Lee vs Saitoh match.
