Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. These differences can arise from varying levels of information access or differing interpretations of available data. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making, but remember each represents a distinct form of forecasting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and reflects the collective forecast of all participants. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and changing sentiment.
