Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds due to varying information sources and incentives. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and profit margins, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If there’s a significant discrepancy between the two, it could indicate that the crowd believes a sportsbook has mispriced the probability of a particular outcome. It’s important to note that prediction markets allow for more dynamic price adjustments as new information emerges, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities closer to the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand, with traders expressing their beliefs about the likelihood of each competitor winning the match. This creates a dynamic and efficient pricing system driven by collective intelligence.
